| Workshop in the Woods for Professionals: Creating landscapes with moss |
| When |
Saturday, October 2, 2010 Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm
|
| Where |
303 Upper Woods Road, Honesdale, PA |
Details |
Landscape designers are invited to this one-day workshop, on Saturday, October 2. Because your signature goes on every project, we invite you to learn good design practices using mosses, how to reduce the risk of a project, and what to avoid. Raise your comfort level and that of your client when recommending mosses for a project. Handouts will include specific instructions for installing and maintaining mosses, and what to expect over time. Instruction includes a brief primer on moss botany (how moss works and spreads), using mosses in designs, growing and inoculating mosses on various surfaces, companion plants, and sustainability.
Join the staff of Moss Acres and special guest instructor and bryologist, Dr. Robin Kimmerer, for what has proven to be a very informative, fun, and visually soothing experience in the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania.
Activities include designing and installing a moss garden using four types of shade-loving mosses, a Hydro-mossing™ demonstration, visiting a green (moss) roof, rehydrating mosses to see how they respond to moisture, hiking to a picturesque water fall and stream, observing companion plants, and a lesson in sustainability.
A catered buffet lunch is included, as well as hands-on, instructional walking tours in the surrounding woods. All attendees will receive the most current version of the “Creating Landscapes with Moss” workshop guidebook, a small, moss sampler pack, aMoss Milkshake, and a signed copy of Dr. Robin Kimmerer’s book,
Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes include the an understanding of moisture, shade and substrate requirements and that these are of primary importance. Participants will also gain an understanding of how moss reproduces and spreads (which is related to moisture), and a knowledge of inoculation, fragmentation, and other propagation procedures. Participants will learn about implementation issues such as siting, light and soil needs, ability to choose and specify specific mosses for shade, water, rock, wall, and other applications, and how to specify and educate clients on maintenance imperatives. As important, participants will leave knowing about the many environmental benefits of moss, and with a heightened awareness and understanding of sustainable practices of moss gathering and use.
Cost:
" $295, catered lunch included. Discounted registration for $249 through August 25 only.

| From Concept to Canopy Trees in Time, Space and Place |
| When |
Saturday, October 9, 2010 Time: all day
|
| Where |
Imperial College, London |
Details |
Consider a future world in which space, structure, function and place are defined primarily by plants – the most durable and largest of which are trees. These plants often establish the context, scale and biosystems of a site. They are highly significant in cultural, economic and emotional terms and demand the designer’s utmost respect. Trees also leave plenty of room for creative interpretation.
Our inspirational line-up of speakers will present very different approaches to planting styles and ecologies – from wilder woodland to more ordered private garden spaces. They will share their passion for planting design – playing with mass and scale, planning longer term for conservation and heritage, and generating a dynamic mix of man-made and organic living systems that express the spirit of now and evolve with maturity.
Let’s go back to our roots as garden designers!
The Speakers:
Tony Kirkham: Head of Arboretum at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He will discuss the design and engineering principles of the Rhizotron and Treetop Walkway, and how these might be applied to other sites, scales and purposes.
Elizabeth Banks: Landscape Architect and President of the RHS. She will talk about her family’s garden at Hergest Croft, where she continues the last century’s tradition of planting newly introduced species.
Rick Darke: American environmentalist, plantsman, photographer and author who believes that designed landscapes are most emotionally satisfying when they draw directly on regional ecology and cultural history.
Julie Toll FSGD: Garden and Landscape Designer and former SGD Chair, whose international practice includes projects in the UK and the Caribbean. Her passion is for cutting edge planting design that has a naturalistic flow and evolves over time.
Mike Calnan : Chair for the day is Head of Parks and Gardens at the National Trust.

| Where |
814 N. 4th Street, Northern Liberties (Philadelphia) 19123 |
Details |
Break out of the winter doldrums and get inspired to create breathtaking container plantings this coming season. Join us for group visit and light brunch at City Planter in Philadelphia. Come and learn how to select appropriate containers and plants from professional gardeners while discovering a source for stunning planters!
Mary will show you how to pick the right style container to insure long term success against the weather, as well as some tips on plant choices in an urban environment. Their style maven and manager, Maura will talk a little about the different lines of containers and why they carry them, and how to match them to building facades and interiors.
Mary Costello and Peter Smith, co-owners of City Planter, have been professional gardeners in the Philadelphia area for over 20 years. See the lush urban oasis they created out of an abandoned seltzer warehouse—it’s well worth a visit. Mary, Peter and Maura will all be on hand to help answer other questions you might have. New on the retail garden scene, they are old hands in the horticulture business.
Remember to bring your business cards to leave with them--many customers come in looking for gardeners, and they will try to fit their needs with people they know in the business.
We look forward to seeing you! Please RSVP by March 21st

Why should you become a certified APLD member?
Beyond the benefits of being given priority listing on the national and chapter APLD websites, Certification conveys to other landscape designers and to the public that you have a superior level of professional knowledge and expertise in the field of landscape design. Only Certified APLD members are allowed to use APLD after their name.
How difficult is the certification process?
To have any meaning the process needs to be comprehensive and based on established standards of excellence. It’s time consuming, but it’s not tricky. The certification board meets four times a year and would like to certify everyone who applies as long as they demonstrate knowledge and competency in our profession. The process is to evaluate the candidate’s submitted work based on a clear set of requirements. There is no interview or oral presentation required or accepted. In order to apply for certification you must have been practicing landscape design for at least four years and be prepared to submit drawings, plant lists, design intent statements and photographs for three installed projects that have had a chance to mature.
At the workshop, Dan will share with us a power point presentation on the certification process as well as his own successful submission. There will be time for questions, so please give some thought to which of your own projects you might want to use before you attend the workshop. If you haven’t yet been in business for four years, you are still encouraged to attend. We like people who plan ahead.

Scott Rothenberger: Flying High: A Landscaping Perspective
We have all dealt with site issues that seemed to have no workable solution. Scott will show that it is possible to work with the negative features of a property to create positive design solutions. With his approach, you will be better able to grasp how to define spaces with remarkable hardscaping that is informed by the existing architecture, and understand how to unify your design with sensational plantings. Scott will discuss his design approach especially as it relates to difficult, problematic sites and will help you to appreciate that there is always a clever solution when you approach your drafting table from his perspective.
Paul Van Meter: Design Inspirations
Paul will discuss the sources of his inspirations as a landscape gardener, sharing his views on what elements make a garden striking. An avid plantsman, he combs the globe with the eye of a practiced observer, camera in hand, seeking new and remarkable plants and ways to use them. As a fan of great design in any form, he will explain how carefully designed built elements and features can unite seamlessly with dramatic, natural and “untamed” plantings that are more sympathetic to the environment. His collaborations and insider associations with the innovative luminaries in the green industry allow him a unique perspective which he will share with us.
Jan Traynor: Charging for Profit
Do you love what you do but wonder if you are really getting paid what you are worth? Do you have trouble charging clients for your designs and consultations? Then it's time to change your approach and maybe your attitude, too! This hands-on lecture is designed to help you learn how to work profitably as a landscape design professional. Developed for the beginning Landscape Design Professional or for anyone who struggles with placing a value on their work.
